The Operation Back to School project was founded in 2014 by the members of the Overcomers Assembly church who sought to reach out to the Montreal-West, Saint-Pierre and Notre-Dame-de-Grâce communities. Today, this local initiative is not only endorsed by the business community but also by the inhabitants living in the surrounding neighborhoods and those from other areas.
The purpose of this project is to promote academic success of young people aged between 5 and 14 in the NDG, Saint-Pierre, Saint-Jacques and Montreal-West neighborhoods.
We provide school bags and school supplies to deserving children in elementary schools as a way to lessen the financial burden on parents and to encourage school retention. To date, over 80 families have benefited from the program, thanks to the generosity of our donors. We have made a difference in the children’s daily lives and ultimately, in their academics.
To celebrate Canada’s 150th and Montreal’s 375th anniversaries, we plan to celebrate the children, as the next generation in line to build the city of Montréal and Canada, by hosting a Reception for the 100 preselected kids and their parents on August 5, 2017. Each student will be awarded a personalized backpack filled with their yearly school supplies.
The families are able to invest the saved resources in other much needed areas such as extracurricular activities.
Operation Back to School is a community project that fosters the sense of belonging in youth, particularly those from less privileged neighbourhoods. We support children aged between 5 and 14 by freely providing their yearly school supplies. We provide hope by supporting families in need and uniting the community in support of education to boost school retention.
Becauseit is our belief that every child deserves an opportunity to succeed
Becauseby helping children we help break the cycle of poverty in their lives and that of the community
Becauseone of the fundamental values of the Canadian society is solidarity
We hope to encourage school retention of young people through this project
Our vision is « one community, one story, one future ». Young people are the heart of a community, and the community is the pillar of our Canadian society. By investing in them, we are shaping the future of our country. Together we can build a stronger and prosperous nation for generations to come. It takes an entire village to raise a child.
Our program is volunteer-driven. We depend on the generosity of donors, and volunteers for their time, money and expertise. We also rely on the expertise of organizations and community-based partners to help us identify families with elementary children living in the less privileged corners of NDG, Saint Pierre and Montreal West.
All donations are fully invested in the sponsorship program.
We contact the families whose children will receive the personalized school bags in July. We purchase the school supplies for each child. The whole process culminates with a celebratory event themed: “Celebrate Our Youth” during which, the students will receive their school supplies.
How can you help us? The Operation Back to School offers you two opportunities:
- ❖ The sponsorship of children aged 5 to 14.
- ❖ “Celebrate our Youth” event during which children will be handed their school furnitures.
Sponsorship program—we are raising funds to sponsor 100 elementary students. We shall buy school bags and personalized school supplies for the children at a cost of 130$ per child. Individuals and businesses can sponsor a child or several children.
Sponsor Our “Celebrate our Youth” event. Families will pick up their kids’ bags at a Reception hosted in their honour on August 5, 2017. We are working with community-based partners in order to identify families that will benefit from this project. Individuals and businesses can donate gifts in kind such as food, drinks, store coupons or any other resource that can help us make our event successful.
Our sponsorship program helps us fund the “Pass it On” event and also ensures proper management of all the funds collected to sponsor children.
We also petition for cost subsidies in order to ensure the perpetuity of our project.
